What Is Funpack Weekend?
Funpack Weekend is an exciting program designed to give a Cub Scout — along with a parent or adult guardian — a chance for an overnight camping experience at a Pine Tree Council camp. Cubs and adults show up Saturday morning ready for a weekend filled with fun and activities! You can swim in the lake, visit the nature area, and try your luck at shooting a bow and arrow or a BB gun at the shooting ranges and much more!

On Saturday evening, you'll enjoy participating in two campfires. The first is a camp-wide campfire at the Council ring. The second is a Pack 47 campfire at our own site. If you have a favorite game, skit or song, this is the time — we love them! After the campfires, Scouts and parents sleep side by side in a wooded campsite. The fun continues on Sunday morning with more program areas.

Funpack Weekend is an exciting introduction for first time campers! It’s great for unit leaders, because parents are there to participate with their son and provide the necessary companionship for those not quite ready to venture out on their own. Funpack Weekend is a great way for Cubs, parents, and leaders to get to know each other in a relaxing environment.

Funpack 2005 Theme:
This year’s Cub Camping theme is “Medieval.” Bring a costume or idea for the campfire show using the Medieval theme, but remember—no toy swords or knives.

Directions To Camp Hinds:
Camp Hinds is located at 146 Plains Road in Raymond, Maine. The camp phone number is 207-665-4878. Estimated drive time from Scarborough is fifty minutes, but be prepared for possible summer traffic. From Scarborogh, take the Maine Turnpike north and get off at Exit 11 (Gray, Maine). Then...

From Exit 63 (Gray, Maine / Formerly Exit 11): Distance:
• Turn right onto West Gray Road (US-202/ME-4) 0.18 miles
• Turn left onto Shaker Road (ME-26) (second traffic light) 2.62 miles
• Turn left onto North Raymond Road (by Dry Mills Store) 0.97 miles
• Turn left onto Egypt Road 3.98 miles
• Turn right onto Webbs Mills Road (ME-85) 1.84 miles
• Turn left onto Plains Road 0.31 miles
• Camp Hinds' entrance will be on your left

Arrival:
Scouts and adults must arrive by 9:00 AM, so everyone has time to register, review their medical forms, receive their “buddy tags,” and load the truck with gear. Due to vehicle restrictions, a trailer or truck will be available to bring gear into and out of the campsite. Gear does not include scouts and adults — we walk. But it’s a good hike.

Buddy System:
The buddy system is used in camp at all times. No Cub Scout should ever be without an adult or buddy with him. In keeping with camp and Council policy, two or more adults must be in the campsite whenever Cubs are in the campsite.

Swim Checks:
All participants will be issued a “buddy tag.” This is their ticket into the swimming and boating areas. Per National BSA Policy, everyone is required to do a swimmer’s classification based on their swimming ability in order to use the waterfront.

Sleeping Gear:
Everyone should bring an outdoor sleeping bag and pillow. Camp Hinds provides each parent and Scout with a tent and two cots.

Clothing:
Scouts and adults should wear their Pack 47 t-shirts if possible. This helps us easily identify each other as members of Pack 47. It’s a big camp, and we will be sharing it with several other packs. Everyone should also bring their Scout uniforms for the Funpack opening and closing ceremonies, as well as Saturday night’s camp-wide campfire, which will include all packs. Be prepared for any possible weather. If it rains, the “show goes on.” Do not wear cotton if rain is in the forecast. If you want some great information on camping attire, visit L.L. Bean’s website at www.llbean.com.

Meals:
First and foremost: bring water! It can get very hot at camp, and we all need to stay hydrated. We will be providing sandwiches, drinks and chips for lunchtime. Everyone is also responsible for bringing their own lunch for Saturday.

For Saturday night’s dinner, Pack 47 will be providing hot dogs, rolls, potato chips, and drinks. Scouts and adults will cook hot dogs over the Pack campfire, before hiking to the camp-wide campfire. Bring a long fork or two if you have them.

Sunday’s breakfast will consist of juice or milk and egg sandwiches (scrambled egg, Canadian bacon and cheese on English muffins).

We will be leaving before noon on Sunday, so nothing is planned for lunch.

If the described meals will not satisfy the more “selective eaters” among us, please pack whatever is preferred. The boys (and adults) also love munchies, so feel free to bring anything extra.

Trading Post:
Camp Hinds operates a camp store to serve campers and visitors. Items include Cub Scout literature, camp T-shirts, patches, mugs, and camp gadgets, along with cold drinks and snacks.

Medical Issues:
Certified medical staff is on duty at all times. In keeping with State of Maine law and BSA policy, all participants must have an up-to-date health form, including immunization dates, complete with insurance information and emergency permission to treat. No physician's statement is required for Funpack Weekend. A copy of the Cub Scout Medical Form can be downloaded from the medical form section of the Pine Tree Council website at www.pinetreebsa.org. Pinetree Council requires that all packs send photocopies (not originals) of their health forms to them at least two weeks prior to our arrival at Camp Hinds, so please submit these to your den leaders as soon as possible.

Photo Release:
Pine Tree Council occasionally takes photos of Scouts, parents and leaders enjoying Funpack Weekend. These photos may be used for future promotional pieces including camp brochures, videos, Pine Spills and/or camp videos. Pack 47 may also wish to include photos on this website. It is the policy of both Pine Tree Council and Pack 47 not to identify youth members by name or address in any photographs, videos or publications where they are used. A copy of the Photo Release Form can be downloaded from the Pine Tree Council website at www.pinetreebsa.org. Please sign the photo release form and return to your den leaders along with your medical form.

Departure:
The Funpack Weekend program will conclude with a closing ceremony at 11:30 AM on Sunday.
